Investigations and Water Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Independent Variable | The experimental factor that is changed by the scientist in the experiment; the variable whose effect is being studied. |
| Manipulated Variable | The variable that is deliberately changed; also known as the independent variable. |
| Dependent Variable | The measurable effect in an experiment. It is what is being measured or observed. |
| Responding Variable | The variable that changes in response to the manipulated variable; also known as the dependent variable. |
| Control | The standard by which the test results can be compared. |
| Constant | The part of the experiment that does not change. |
| Density | Mass per unit volume; tells us whether an object will float or sink. |
| Solute | A substance that is dissolved in a solution. |
| Solvent | A liquid substance capable of dissolving other substances. |
| Hypothesis | An educated guess; written in an if... then statement before the experiment is done. |
| Observation | Information obtained through the five senses. |
| Inference | A logical interpretation, or guess, based on prior knowledge and experience. |
| Universal Solvent | Substance that can dissolve just about anything; water. |
| Adhesion | An attraction between molecules of different substances. |
| Cohesion | An attraction between molecules of the same substance. |
| Surface Tension | The force that acts on the surface of a liquid and causes it to "stick" together. |
