Investigations and Water Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Independent Variable The experimental factor that is changed by the scientist in the experiment; the variable whose effect is being studied.
Manipulated Variable The variable that is deliberately changed; also known as the independent variable.
Dependent Variable The measurable effect in an experiment. It is what is being measured or observed.
Responding Variable The variable that changes in response to the manipulated variable; also known as the dependent variable.
Control The standard by which the test results can be compared.
Constant The part of the experiment that does not change.
Density Mass per unit volume; tells us whether an object will float or sink.
Solute A substance that is dissolved in a solution.
Solvent A liquid substance capable of dissolving other substances.
Hypothesis An educated guess; written in an if... then statement before the experiment is done.
Observation Information obtained through the five senses.
Inference A logical interpretation, or guess, based on prior knowledge and experience.
Universal Solvent Substance that can dissolve just about anything; water.
Adhesion An attraction between molecules of different substances.
Cohesion An attraction between molecules of the same substance.
Surface Tension The force that acts on the surface of a liquid and causes it to "stick" together.
