| bronchial gland | mucous-producing exocrine glands found in the submucosa that are stimulated by parasympathetic nerves and secrete a relatively watery fluid |
| bronchorrhea | excessive discharge of respiratory tract secretions |
| endogenous surfactant | complex mixture of phospholipids and proteins produced in the lung by type II pneumocytes that play a crucial role in reducing alveolar surface tension and preventing alveolar collapse |
| exogenous surfactant | surfactant drugs that are produced outside of the patient's own body; may be obtained from humans, animals or synthesized in the laboratory |
| expectorant | substance that improves the discharge or expulsion of respiratory secretions by increasing the output from the bronchial glands |
| goblet cell | secretory cells found in the mucosal epithelium that produce gelatinous mucus and increase in size and number with topical irritation and exposure to irritants |
| hydrophilic | describes a molecule or substance that is attracted to water |
| hypertonic | a solution containing a greater concentration of salt than is normally found in the body |
| hypotonic | a solution containing a lower concentration of salt than is normally found in the body |
| isotonic | a solution containing the same concentration of salt as that found in the body |
| maintenance therapy | medications that provide long-term control of symptoms, such as shortness of breath and wheezing; usually taken daily |
| rhinorrhea | excessive secretion from the nose |
| stomatitis | inflammation of the mucous lining in the mouth |
| surface tension | force of contraction at the surface of a liquid that pulls the molecules at the surface inward and down |
