Rib springing Description | Pt prone while examiner's hands are placed around posterolateral aspect of rib cage, 45 degree to vertical axis of pt's body. Begin at top of rib cage & extends inferiorly, springing ribs by pushing in with hands on each side in turn & quickly releasing |
Rib springing results | Positive: pain, excessive motion of rib or restriction |
Thoracic springing purpose | Evaluates intervertebral joint mobility in thoracic spine |
Thoracic springing description | Pt is prone. Apply posterior/anterior/springs to transverse processes of thoracic vertebrae |
Thoracic springing results | positive: pain, excessive motion of rib or restriction |
Slump test purpose | Identifies dysfunction of neurological structures supplying lower limb |
Slump test description | Pt sit and slumps so spine flexes, sh sag forward, while chin&head erect. No symptoms: flex pt's neck and sh slumped to see if produce sympt. No sympt: passively extend knees. No symptoms: then passively DF foot |
Slump test result | Reproduction of pt's symptoms, implicating impingement of dura and SC of n roots |
