HSPS Unit 1 Vocab

Unit 1 Vocabulary Words

TermDefinition
Physical Science the sciences concerned with the study of inanimate natural objects, including physics, chemistry, and related subjects.
Solid the phase of matter with a fixed volume and shape, particles do not move but vibrate in place
Liquid phase of matter with a fixed volume, but no fixed shape. Particles can freely move past each other
Gas phase of matter with no fixed volume or shape, particles have large spaces between them and move freely
Plasma phase of matter similar to gas with no fixed volume or shape. Plasma is gas that has been ionized, meaning that it has lost electrons. It glows
Temperature the measurement of the amount of thermal energy in an object. Commonly measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit.
Thermal Energy energy contained within an object that is responsible for its temperature
Bose-Einstein Condensates a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter that is typically formed when a gas of bosons at very low densities is cooled to temperatures very close to absolute zero
Heat of Fusion the amount of heat needed to melt a solid into a liquid
Heat of Vaporization the amount of heat needed to convert a liquid into a vapor (gas)
Evaporating the process of liquid turning into a gas
Boiling the action of adding thermal energy into a liquid to cause it to bubble and turn into a vapor
Freezing the action of removing thermal energy from a liquid to turn it into a solid
Melting the action of adding thermal energy to a solid to convert it to a liquid
Deposition the action of a gas converting directly into a solid, skipping the liquid phase
Sublimation the action of a solid turning into a gas, skipping the liquid phase

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
