| Adenoids | a collection of lymph tissue in the nasopharynx. They are also called tonsils. |
| The apex of the lung | the uppermost portion of the lung. |
| Apical | pertaining to the apex. |
| The base of the lung | the lower portion of the lung. |
| Bronchioles | the smallest branches of the bronchi. |
| bronchus or bronchi | branch from the trachea and are the air tubes that go into the lung. They act as a passageway into the air spaces of the lung. |
| The diaphragm | the muscle separating the chest and the abdomen. |
| The epiglottis | the lid-like piece of cartilage that covers the larynx. |
| Inhalation | breathing in and exhalation is breathing out. |
| The larynx | the voice box. |
| The lobes of the lungs | the divisions of the lungs. |
| The mediastinum | the region between the lungs in the chest cavity. It contains the trachea, heart, aorta, esophagus and bronchial tubes. |
| Paranasal sinuses | air-containing cavities in the bones near the nose. |
| The trachea | the windpipe. |
