| Calcium | one of the mineral constituents of bone |
| Cartilage tissue | flexible, rubbery connective tissue found on joint surfaces and in the embryonic skeleton |
| condyle | a knuckle-like process at the end of a bone near the joint |
| Cranial bones | skull bones and are identified with the proper terms of frontal, ethmoid, parietal, sphenoid, temporal, and occipital |
| diaphysis | the shaft or mid-portion of a long bone |
| disk or disc | a flat, round plate-like structure. |
| intervertebral disk | a fibrocartilaginous substance between the vertebrae. |
| epiphyseal plate | a cartilaginous area at the end of long bones where lengthwise growth takes place. |
| epiphysis | the end of a long bone. |
| Facial bones | bones of the face and their proper terms are lacrimal, mandible, maxillae, nasal, vomer and zygomatic |
| False ribs | ribs 8 - 10 in the paired 12 that are within the body |
| fissure | a narrow, slit-like opening between bones |
| Floating ribs | ribs numbered 11 and 12 |
| foramen | an opening or passage in bones where blood vessels and nerves enter and leave. For example, the foramen magnum is the opening of the occipital bone at the base of the skull through which the spinal cord passes through |
| fossa | a shallow cavity in a bone |
| malleolus | the round process found on both sides of the ankle joint |
| olecranon | a large process forming the elbow |
| Ossification | the process of bone formation |
| osteoblast | a bone cell that helps form bone tissue |
| osteoclast | a bone cell that absorbs and removes unwanted bone tissue |
| periosteum | the membrane surrounding bones |
| pubic symphysis | the area of fusion of the two pubic bones |
| hemopoiesis | Red bone marrow is found in bone |
| paranasal sinus | A sinus is a cavity within a bone |
| tubercle | a small rounded process on a bone |
| tuberosity | a large, rounded process on a bone |
| vertebra | the back bone |
| cervical vertebrae | the neck region, |
| thoracic vertebrae | the upper back |
| lumbar vertebrae | the lower back |
| diaphyses of long bones | The yellow bone marrow is fatty tissue |
