QuestionAnswer
Functions of the skeleton -provides a framework -protects -contains red bone marrow -stores calcium
Bone tissues -compact bone -spongy bone -osteon

Bone tissue that has NO haversian systems Spongy bone
haversian system is Osteon
Structural unit of compact bone Haversion system
bone cells are called osteocytes
what of the bone is made up of calcium salts and collagen Matrix
what makes a long bone a diaphysis and two epiphyses
what bones were first made of fibrous connective tissue Cranial and facial bones
replacement by bone matric radiates from a center of ossification in each bone fibrous connective tissue
Bone matrix is produced by cells called osteoblasts
this process is not completed at birth; a baby has areas of fibrous connective tissue remaining between the bones of the skull Fontanels
large cells that secretes acid and enzymes to dissolve and digest a microscopic bit of bone matrix, then absorbs the minerals and amino acids Osteoclasts ( "destroying" cell)
what bones first center of ossification is in the diaphysis? The Long Bones
All other bones are first made of? Cartilage
what deposits matrix material and collagen? Clusters of osteoblasts (called centers for ossification)
genetic potential Heredity
What absorbs calcium in the small intestine Vitamin D
what is needed for bone matrix production? Vitamins A and C
what becomes part of bone matrix? Calcium, Phosphorus, and protein
Bone growth and maintenance Growth hormone, thyroxine, insulin parathyroid hormone, and calcitonin
Cessation of bone growth Estrogen or testosterone (epiphyseal discs)
