What is Atypical/Uncommon defined by? (3 things) - nature of symptoms (hallucinations, suicidal) - # of symptoms/duration - consequences
What is Maladaptive defined by? (3 things) - significant subjective distress - significant impairment in functioning - personal harm/ risk of harm to others

What is the Goal of Assessment? (2 things) - develop diagnosis - determine treatment plan
What should a treatment plan include? relevant to clients concern, diagnosis, and goals - based on evidence-based practice
What are the Goals and Objective of Treatment? - client and therapist collaborate on creating goals/ objectives for treatment - assess clients based on their level of motivation & readiness to change - motivational interviewing can improve prognosis for therapeutic outcome (ambivalent client)
Define Therapeutic Alliance the quality of the relationship between client & therapist ( a strong predictor of the therapeutic outcome)
What characteristics create better therapeutic alliances? empathy, genuineness, warmth
Residential treatment for severe situations that haven't responded to outpatient treatment or need intensive treatment (eating disorders, substances)
Inpatient hospitalization when client is in crisis or danger of harm
Outpatient majority of mental health treatment is outpatient
Interventions (4 things) - more than 400 exist - empirically supported treatments (APA) - division 53 of APA has list of EST's for children/adolescents - EST's are available for some disorders, not ALL disorders
Individual therapy good choice for first time, in crisis, or feel vulnerable
Group Therapy often first choice for interpersonal issues, helps normalize problems/reduce shame, substance and eating disorders
Couple and Family Therapy number of EST's available for couple, parent-child, family issues (anorexia, depression, ADHD)
Timing of Outpatient Therapy mostly once/week, 50-60 minute sessions most therapeutic effect likely to occur in first 10-20 sessions studies suggest short term therapy have significant impact
Medication - often used in combo w/ therapy (ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar_ - non-medical clinicians NEED to understand the role medications play in treatment and when to refer for medication
Adjunctive/Complementary Services (7 things) - exercise - parent training - career counseling - relaxation training - serving as volunteer - family psychoeducation - online mental health resources
