Introduction to medical terminology

TermDefinition
Eponym A person who discovered the illness or procedure
Acronym An abbreviated formed from the initial letter or letters of a word or phrase
Prefix A unit of a meaning attached to the front of a word
Root The core or foundation of a words meaning; all medical terms have at least ONE root word
Combining vowel a vowel added to the end of a root word, without changing the meaning
Combining form The root and combining vowel together
Suffix A unit of meaning attached to the end of a word
Determining the meaning of a term LOOK AT THE PARTS (Suffix, Prefix, Roots)
Structures of the human body Cells, tissues, organs, and systems
Cell All plants and animals are made up of cells
Microscopic So small you cannot see without a microscope (all cells are microscopic)
Three Main Parts of the Cell Plasma Membrane, Cytoplasm, and Nucleus
Plasma Membrane Outer boundary; made up of proteins and lipids; keeps harmful substances out
Cytoplasm Material that forms cells; fills space between the plasma membrane and nucleus
Nucleus Command and control center of the cell; contains nucleoplasm, a nucleolus, ribosomes
Nuclear membrane A double layered substance that has openings in it to let materials pass between it and the cytoplasm
Endoplasmic reticulum network of structures in the cytoplasm that connects those parts of the cell and functions in transportation and storage
Tissue A body of cells organized to perform a certain function
Four Tissue Types Epithelial, Muscle, Connective, Nerve
Membrane formed when two thin layers of tissue join together; usually secrete a fluid
Senovial membranes Line of cavities of joint that move freely, such as shoulders, elbows, knees, and fingers
