Final Review

Terms to study for the final exam.

TermDefinition
Bonds Link the particles of a substance in the liquid and solid phases.
Evaporation A phase change from liquid to gas due to an increase in kinetic energy.
Metalloid Elements found on the periodic table "stair case" that have qualities of both metals and non-metals.
Solute The part of the solution that is broken down into the other substance.
Slope The steepness of a line on a graph.
Weight A measurement of how much gravity affects a certain mass.
Acceleration Speeding up or slowing down.
Friction A force of resistance that slows down and stops things from moving.
Joules The units used for both potential and kinetic energy
Expansion Increasing the volume of a substance without changing the amount. Can be done by increasing temperature or lowering pressure.
Atom The smallest possible amount of a certain type of element.
Compression Decreasing the volume of a substance using increased pressure.
Gravity A force that pulls things toward the center of a massive object.
Noble Gas Non-Reactive elements that are gases. Can extremely colorful when lit up by electricity.
Chemical Formula The recipe of a chemical. What it is made of and how much.
Contraction Decreasing the volume of a substance by decreasing the kinetic energy of it.
Insoluble Unable to be dissolved in a given solvent.
Melting A phase change from solid to liquid through increased temperature.
Neutrons Found in the nucleus attached to protons. Have no charge.
Atomic Mass The mass of all the subatomic particles of an element added together. This number is found below the element symbol.
Scientific Method The steps to carrying out scientific research and experiment.
Newton's 1st Law An object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.
Gas A phase of matter where free floating particles are colliding and move with lots of kinetic energy.
Chemical Reaction When reactants are put together and create a new product (different than you started with).
Conduction A type of heat transfer where particles collide and energy flows from high to low.
Solution A type of mixture where there is a solute dissolved.
Reactive non-metals The misfit toys sections of the periodic table. These elements are all unique but are all reactive.
Radiation Energy transfer through electromagnetic waves. Does not need particles to happen.
Mass The amount of matter in an object measured in grams or kg.
Force A push or a pull.
Newtons's 3rd Law Every force has an equal and opposite force.
Sublimation A phase change from solid directly to gas.
Electron A negatively charged subatomic particle found in shells around nucleus.
Spring Scale Used to measure the weight and mass of objects through a spring.
Speed Found by measuring the distance an object travels in a certain time frame.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
