BI-RADS category 2 benign finding
BI-RADS category 3 probably benign finding- short interval follow-up suggested
BI-RADS category 4 suspicious abnormality- biopsy should be considered
BI-RADS category 5 highly suggestive of malignancy- appropriate action should be taken
BI-RADS category 6 known biopsy-proven malignant ~ the patient has had prior positive biopsy
BI-RADS ACRONYM BREAST IMAGING REPORTING and DATA SYSTEM
BI-RADS category 0 incomplete- needs additional imaging information and/or priors for comparison
Anasarca Severe, generalized, and massive Edema
Asymmetry the presence of glandular tissue in one portion of the breast that isn't in similar portion of other breast
Focal Asymmetric lesion limited to small area of asymmetric fibroglandular tissue seen on CC and MLO
Global Asymmetry covers larger portion of breast, typically more than one quadrant
Adenosis (tumoral adenosis) enlargement of breast lobules, which contain more glands than usual
Sclerosing adenosis enlarged lobules are distorted by scar-like fibrous tissue
Abscess of the breast More common in lactating breast. Can be red, hot, and painful mass, U/S helps determine if drainable
Connective Tissue Disease Any disease of the connective tissue and often includes an autoimmune and/or inflammatory component. (common- rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis)
Cysts Occur in the TDLUs when the extralobular terminal duct becomes blocked. Fluid accumulates faster than it can be reabsorbed. Vary in size and respond to hormonal fluctuations.
Tense Cysts round shaped cyst
Lax Cysts Can be any shape depending on the compression applied
Cytology refers to the study of cells, including their formation, origin, structure, function, biochemical activity, and pathologic characteristics.
TDLU Terminal ductal lobular units
Duct Ectasia blocked duct causes area around nipple to become red and tender, causing a thick, green, black, or sticky discharge. (commonly found in women in their 40s/50s)
