TermDefinition
Wavelength the distance between two crests or two troughs
Frequency how many wavelengths pass a fixed point each second
Amplitude height of a wave, or the amount of energy in a wave
Electromagnetic Waves are waves made by vibrating electric charges
Compressional wave a wave in which particles move back and forth in the direction of the wave motion
Light a form of radiant energy that travels as an electromagnetic wave
Photons tiny bundles of energy that make up light
ray when Light travels in a straight line
prism a triangular piece of glass that breaks up white light into a band of colors
Dispersion when a prism breaks up white light into the band of colors
Refraction when a wave bends as it passes through a different medium, and changes its speed or direction
luminous an object that produces, or gives off its own light
Bioluminescence living organisms producing their own light
illuminated an object reflects light
opaque An object that blocks light
transparent A material that transmits light easily
translucent A material that transmits some light
Sound a form of energy caused by vibrations
vibration any rapid back and forth movement
medium any material through which a wave travels (solid, liquid, gas)
vacuum empty space with no particles whatsoever
echo A reflected sound wave
reverberation Repeated echoes of sound
Echolocation Bats and dolphins listen for echoes to locate their prey
