Medication actions on the nervous system
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| What is the function of the somatic nervous system (SoNS)? | Regulates or controls voluntary muscles |
| Which neurotransmitter stimulates receptors on muscles to make them move? | Acetylcholine |
| What is the function of the ANS? | Controls nonvoluntary functions such as blood pressure, digestion, breathing, and pupil dilation/constriction |
| Examples of fight or flight reactions of the SNS? | -Heart rate increases -Bronchioles dilate -Pupils dilate -Digestion slows |
| What allows the SNS and the PSNS to balance each other out? | Dual Innervation of organs and tissues |
| What are the effects of medications that stimulate alpha receptors? | Excitation, stimulation or constriction of the organ or tissue |
| What are the effects of medications that stimulate beta receptors? | Relaxation, inhibition or dilation of the organ or tissue except for the heart. Stimulation of beta receptors in the heart increases blood pressure |
| What is the effect of medications that stimulate muscarinic receptors? | Muscle contraction |
| What are the effects of medications that inhibit muscarinic receptors? | Dry mouth, dry eyes, pupil dilation, urine retention, and constipation |
| Examples of anticholinergic medications | Diphenhydramine |
