Intro to Radiation Protection & Radiation Types, Sources, & Doses
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ionization | The ability to produce electrically charged particles by removing orbital electrons from an atom |
| Consequence of ionization | Creating free radicals who can create new biologic molecules detrimental to the living cell |
| Property of x-rays | Unaffected by electric or magnetic fields and cannot be focused by a lens |
| Team approach | When participants assume responsibility for their areas of expertise and emphasize communication when caring for a patient |
| Radiation protection | Effective measures to safeguard patients, personnel, and the general public from unnecessary ionizing radiation exposure |
| Exposure | The amount of ionizations produced in air |
| Absorbed dose | The amount of energy deposited in ai material per unit of mass |
| Equivalent dose | Takes into account the type of ionizing radiation that was absorbed |
| Effective dose | The best overall measure of the biologic effects of ionizing radiation |
| Diagnostic efficacy | Basis for determining whether an imaging procedure or practice is justified to reveal the presence or absence of disease |
| Optimization for radiation protection (ORP) | Synonym for ALARA where all reasonable actions that will reduce dose to patients and personnel are employed |
| Threshold | A dose level below which a person would have no chance of developing a disease |
| Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) | Person directly responsible for the execution, enforcement, and maintenance of the ALARA program by hospital administration |
| BERT Method | Explains radiation to the public by comparing the amount of radiation received to natural background radiation over a period of time |
| Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging | Organization that raises awareness for dose reduction pediatric-specified scan protocols in CT |
| Image Gently pledge | Encourages annual staff communication and reviewing protocol recommendations and adjustments as well as openly communicating with parents |
| Pause and Pulse | Promotes safe fluoro operations on pediatric patients by adjusting techniques and using the lowest pulse rate |
| Image Wisely Campaign | Encourages lowering the amount of radiation used in all medically necessary imaging studies and eliminating unnecessary procedures for adults |
| Radiation | The emission of energy in the form of electromagnetic waves or moving subatomic particles passing through space from one location to another |
