| stanza | a group of lines that are grouped together |
| meter | the number of syllables in a line and how they are accented to create the "beat" or "rhythm" of a poem |
| rhyme | pairs of words that have the same ending sounds |
| repetition | words or phrases that are repeated. |
| refrain | a repeated phrase |
| alliteration | the repetition of the a wound at the beginning ofwords |
| onomatopoeia | a word that sounds like the sound it makes |
| metaphor | says one thing IS another. Does not use like or as |
| simile | a comparison of two things that are different, using the words like or as |
| personification | nonhuman things are given human qualities |
| hyperbole | an intentional and exaggerated emphasis or effect |
| idiom | a phrase that does not literally mean what it says |
| mood | the feeling the writer creates for the reader |
| tone | the writers attitude toward a subject |
| imagery | words that create a mental image (picture) for the reader |
| sensory language | uses the 5 senses to create emotional effect |
