What are the 3 key questions of the HBM? | 1) Perceived seriousness. 2) Perceived susceptibility. 3)Cost-benefit analysis |
What is 'perceived seriousness'? | change depends on how we perceive outcomes of not changing |
What is 'perceived susceptibility'? | only change if we see ourselves as realistically vulnerable to illness |
What is 'cost-benefit analysis'? | balance of perceived benefits and perceived barriers |
What are 'perceived benefits'? | advantages of changing behaviour |
What are 'perceived barriers'? | obstacles preventing us changing |
What are the 3 modifying factors? | 1) demographic variables 2) cues to action 3) self-efficacy |
What are 'demographic variables'? | Age, gender, religion etc affect likelihood of change |
What are 'cues to action'? | internal (e.g. pain) and external (e.g. doctor's advice) |
What is 'self-efficacy'? | change is more likely if we believe we have the ability to do it |
