Material Handling Equipment

| 1. Manually Operated Equipment | Hand Trucks - Moves small items short distances. Also called a dolly Platform trucks - Used in confined spaces to transport goods to shipping areas Pallet Jack - Can be manual or battery powered. Moves pallets short distances. hydraullically operated |
| 2. Forklift Accidents | - According to OSHA, 85 deaths per year due to forklift accidents in the U.S. - Approx. 35,000 serious injuries per year. - Aprox. 60,000 non-serious injuries per year - There are more than 850,000 fork lifts in the U.S. |
| 3. Forklift Certification | There is no specific forklift license but forklift drivers need to be certified every 3 years. If forklifts use special equipment to mover 35 gallonor 50 gallon drums, or use a forklift man basket, the driver must also be certified for this. |
| 4. Electric Pallet Trucks | Single Pallet Truck -Operator walks alongside (speed 3 mph) Single Pallet Driver Truck - Operator rides along with one pallet (speed 7 mph) Double Pallet Driver Truck - Operator rides along with two pallets ( Speed 7mph) |
| 5. Counterbalanced Forklifts | Weight of the forklift keep it from tipping over. Most Common Piece of Eq in the warehouse. Handle loads up to 6000 lbs. Can be propane or gas-powered. |
| 6. Order Picker | Raises the operater up to retrieve items from higher racks |
| 7. Narrow Aisle Forklift | Mainly use in the narrow spaces between warehouse racks.(8 ft aisles instead of 10ft) Usually have standing platforms |
| 8. Very Narrow Aisle Forklift | - Operate in extremely tight spaces - Are normally wire guided or rail guided - can rotate 180 degrees to handle loads on both sides of the aisle - These racks may stack up to 32-35 feet high |
| 9. Sideloader | The forks of the forklift stick out perpendicular to the forklift (To the side) |
| 10. Carton Clamp Truck | - Use large clamps to grip the cartons - The clamp attachment may be able to be used with normal forklifts |
| 11. Conveyors - Introduction | - Move products from one place to another - Operators must remain safe and know where the Emergency stop button is and how to use it. |
| 12. Gravity Conveyors | least expensive, most basic Uses rollers and gravity (no electric power) |
| 13. Powered Conveyors | Uses belts, chains, and motors to drive the rollers |
| 14. Automated Conveyor Systems | Conveyor Sorting Systems - Sorts and repacks cartons by scanning barcodes. Can sort up to 10,000-20,000 cases per hour Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors - Have buckets, arms or platforms that move products up and down between levels |
| 15. Overhead Handling Equipment | - Overhead Traveling Conveyor - Overhead Crane and Hoist - Overhead Traveling Cranes -Gantry |
| 16. Automated Warehouse Systems | - Automated Guided Vehicle - Vehicles guided by wire, tape, paint or magnets. Lasers follow the path Automated Storage / Retrieval Systme (AS/RS) - Large rail robot used in an aisle to handle material up to 100 feet high |
