| learning | the process of acquiring through experience new and relatively enduring information or behaviors |
| associated learning | learning that certain events occur together |
| cognitive learning | the acquisition of mental information, whether by observing events, or watching others, though language |
| observational learning | we learn from others' behaviors |
| classical conditioning | we associate two stimuli, and thus anticipate events |
| stimulus | any event or situation that evokes a response |
| respondent behavior | behavior that occurs as an automatic response to some stimulus |
| operant behavior | behavior that operates on the environment, producing consequences |
| operant conditioning | associating a response (behavior) and a consequence |
| habituation | can occur when a human/animal learns by association something to expect (response is diminished) |
| ivan pavlov | pioneered the research of classical conditioning, and he was responsible for laying the foundation for the school of behaviorism to arise |
| behaviorism | the view that psychology should be an objective science and that studies behavior without reference to mental process |
