Important words to understand when reading fiction

| FICTION | prose writing that tells about imaginary or false characters and events |
| CHARACTER | a person, animal, or thing that takes part in the action of the story |
| CHARACTERIZATION | the act of creating or developing a character |
| STATIC CHARACTER | a character that does not change in the story |
| DYNAMIC CHARACTER | a character that changes throughout the story |
| DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION | the author clearly states a character’s traits |
| INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION | the author gives clues about a character, but you have to decide what the character is like |
| ANTAGONIST | a character or force in conflict with the main character |
| PROTAGONIST | the main character in a story |
| CLIMAX | the most exciting or suspenseful part of the story |
| CONFLICT | a struggle or problem in a story |
| DIALOGUE | a conversation between characters where quotation marks clarify speakers’ words |
| FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE | writing not meant to be interpreted literally |
| FORESHADOWING | the use of word clues that help the reader to predict the future events in a story |
| IMAGERY | the use of words to create pictures for the reader |
| METAPHOR | two different objects are compared to each other |
| SIMILE | two different objects are compared to each other using ‘like’ or ‘as’ |
| TONE/MOOD | using details to create a specific feeling in a story |
| PERSONIFICATION | a nonhuman object is given human characteristics |
| PLOT | the events that take place in a story |
| SETTING | the time and place of a story |
| SYMBOL | a thing that represents or stands for something else |
| THEME | the central message of a story |
