| What are waves? | - Disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space. - Waves carry energy. - The material does not move with the energy. - Ex. Phone rings you don’t feel a rush of air. |
| What are the types of waves? | Mechanical & Electromagnetic waves. |
| Mechanical Wave. | A wave that requires a medium. |
| What are some examples of a Mechanical Wave? | Sound waves, Ocean waves, and Guitar String. |
| Electromagnetic Wave. | Are waves that do not “require” a medium but can travel through one. |
| What is a medium? | Substance through which waves travel. |
| Transverse Wave. | Transverse particles vibrate with an up and down motion. |
| Examples of a Transverse wave? | Electromagnetic waves or a wave on a rope. |
| Parts of a Transverse wave? | Crest- highest point Trough- lowest point |
| Longitudinal Wave. | Particles of the medium vibrate back and forth along the path that the waves travel. |
| Examples of a Longitudinal Wave? | Slinky or sound waves. |
| Parts of a Longitudinal wave. | Compression and Rarefaction. |
| Rarefaction. | Parts are less crowded. |
| Compression. | Parts are crowded. |
| Surface Waves. | Combination of transverse and longitudinal waves between two media (air and water). |
| Amplitude. | Height of the wave. |
| Larger Amplitude. | Taller wave and more energy. |
| Wavelength. | The distance between any 2 adjacent crests. |
| Frequency. | The number of waves produced in a given amount of time. |
| Formula. | Wave Speed (velocity), Wavelength, Frequency Formula V = λ x f (λ= lambda) |
| Wave Speed. | The distance traveled over time. Depends greatly on medium. |
| Units. | Frequency= Hertz (Hz) Wave Speed= lambda Wavelength= (m) |
| Reflection. | Occurs when a wave bounces back after striking a barrier. |
| Diffraction. | The bending of waves around a barrier or through an opening. |
| Refraction. | The bending of a wave as it passes at an angle from one medium to another. |
| Interference. | Constructive crests or destructive crests. |
