Map Skills Vocabulary

continent one of the Earth's seven large bodies of land
legend tells you what each symbol on the map stands for
cardinal directions one of the four main points on the Compass Rose
intermediate directions a direction halfway between two cardinal directions
scale a guide that explains the relationship between real distances on Earth and distances on a map
longitude an imaginary line or meridian measuring distance east or west of the prime meridian
latitude an imaginary line or parallel measuring distance north or south of the equator
equator an imaginary line encircling Earth half way between the North Pole and the South Pole
Tropic of Cancer a parallel of latitude north of the equator; the northern boundary of the Torrid Zone
Tropic of Capricorn a parallel of latitude south of the equator; the southern boundary of the Torrid Zone
Prime Meridian the line of longitude labeled 0 degrees
degree a unit of measurement; it can be used for calculating latitude and longitude
intersect to cross or go through
geography the study of the Earth and the way people live in it and use it
region a large area with common features that sets it apart form other areas
landform a shape on the Earth's surface such as a mountain or hill
Political Map a map that shows the boundaries of states and countries
Physical Map a map that highlights Earth's natural features
Relief Map a map that uses shading to show the difference in height between areas of land
Elevation Map a map that uses color to show the elevation (height) of land above sea level
Road Map a map that indicates cities, highways, and points of interest and shows you how to get form one place to another
Historical Map a map that shows information about the past or where past events took place
Economic Map a map that features a type of natural resources or economic activity that dominates the area
Climate Map a map that gives general information about the climate and precipitation (rain, snow, etc.) or a region
