alveolar duct airway that branches from the smallest bronchioles; alveolar sacs arise from alveolar ducts
alveolus literally, a small cavity; alveoli of lungs are microscopic saclike dilations of terminal bronchioles; gas exchange in the lungs occurs across the membranes of the alveoli
arytenoid cartilage either of a pair of cartilages found in the supporting framework of the larynx
bronchiole small branch of a bronchus
bronchopulmonary segment region of the lung supplied by a tertiary bronchus [bronch-windpipe,
costal surface region of the lungs that lies against the ribs; rounded to match contour of thoracic cavity
hilum lit on medial surface of each lung where primary bronchi and pul-monary vessels enter; slit on medial surface of each kidney where blood vessels and other structures enter the kidney; any other such notch or slit in an organ
horizontal fissure separates the superior lobe of the right lung from the middle lobe
lingual tonsil tonsil located at the base of the tongue
oblique fissure fissure in the lungs that separates the inferior and medial lobes
palatine tonsil either of a pair of tonsils located behind and below the pillars of the fauces
parietal pleura serous membrane that lines the entire tho-racic cavity
vibrissa coarse hair found in the skin of the vestibule of the nose
visceral pleura the serous membrane that adheres to and covers the lung
vomeronasal organ (VNO) sensory organ for detecting pheromones (sex signal molecules) located in the muscosa of the nasal septum
