| Sensory detail | Evokes the senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) with descriptive words to create a vivid scene |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that represent sounds, with pronunciations similar to those sounds |
| Alliteration | Using a sequence of words that begin with the same letter or sound |
| Assonance | The repetition of the vowel sound across words within the lines of the poem creating internal rhymes |
| Consonance | The repetition of the same consonant sounds in a line of text |
| Enjambment | The continuation of a sentence or phrase from one line of poetry to the next |
| Parallel structure | Repeating the same pattern of words for effect - this could be starting with the same word or type of word, or using a pattern of words that have the same structure |

| Meter | Rhythm pattern in a line of poetry based on beats and syllables |

| Stanza | Group of lines within a poem, usually set off from others by a blank line |
| Internal rhyme | Rhyme involving a word in the middle of a line and another at the end or middle of the next |
