Elements of Poetry
Term | Definition |

Stanza | A series of lines grouped together in order to divide a poem. |
Verse/Line | A single line in a poetic composition. |
Rhythm | The pattern of stressed nd unstressed syllables in a poem, like a beat or a musical rhythm. |
Imagery | Words and phrases that appeal to the senses. Like sight, sound, taste, touch and smell to create vivid pictures in the readers mind. |
Point of View | The way someone sees or thinks about something. It's like looking at a story through someone else's eyes. |
Symbolism | When something represents or stands for something else, often an idea or concept. |
Theme | The big idea or lesson that a story or poem teaches us. The moral of the poem. |
Repetition | Repeating words, phrases, or lines in a poem to create emphasis or rhythm. |
Meter | The regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. |
Rhyme | When words have the same ending sound like "cat" and "hat." |
Poetry | Writing that sometimes uses creative language, rhythm, and sometimes rhyme to express feelings and ideas. |
