Literary Elements

| plot | the events in a fictional story or the sequence of events |
| static character | a character that stays the same throughout a story |
| fiction | writing that comes from the author’s imagination |
| climax | the turning point or the point of greatest interest |
| resolution | the part of the plot that ends the story and resolves the conflict and it can be referred to as the denouement |
| dynamic character | a character that changes as the story progresses |
| antagonist | the enemy of the protagonist |
| protagonist | the hero and main character of a story |
| setting | where and when a story takes place |
| conflict | can be external or internal, as well as versus society and nature |
| theme | the main message or idea of the story |
| 5 plot stages in order | exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution |
| point of view | perspective used to tell a story |
| first person point of view | the narrator as a character in the story; uses I, me, my, us, we, our |
| second person point of view | addresses the reader directly using the pronouns “you,” “your,” |
| third person point of view (omniscient) | narrator is able to know the thoughts and feelings of ALL of the characters and is able to express what they are thinking to the reader. |
| third person point of view (limited) | narrator tells the story as an outside observer who only focuses on the thoughts and feelings of ONE character. |
