Force & Motion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| force | a push or pull |
| friction | a force acting in the opposite direction of another force, causing an object to slow down or stop |
| gravity | an invisible force that pulls objects toward Earth |
| motion | a change in an objects position |
| balanced force | two or more forces of the same strength acting in opposite directions resulting in no motion |
| unbalanced force | two or more forces with different strengths causing an object to move |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| kinetic energy | moving energy |
| potential energy | stored energy |
| inertia | the tendency of an object to resist change in motion |
| momentum | a measurement of mass in motion |
| Newton's Laws | a scientist named Isaac Newton developed 3 laws to scientifically explain why objects move or stop. Law 1: Objects in motion stay in motion, while objects at rest stay at rest. Law 2: The movement of an object is dependent on the strength of the force AND the mass of the object. Law 3: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. |
