QuestionAnswer
organic chemistry The study of organic compounds
organic compound Contains carbon and hydrogen, often combined with a few other elements such as oxygen and nitrogen
3 forms of carbon Diamond, graphite, and fullerenes
hydrocarbons Compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen
saturated hydrocarbon All the bonds in the compounds are single bonds
arrangement of carbon atoms A straight chain, a branched chain, or a ring
isomers Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formulas
3 types of unsaturated hydrocarbons Alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, and alkynes
fossil fuels The main source of hydrocarbons
3 types of fossil fuels Coal, natural gas, and petroleum
complete combustion When hydrocarbons of fossil fuels are burned in the presence of adequate oxygen, the primary products are carbon dioxide and water
incomplete combustion When there is not enough oxygen available for complete combustion of all the fuel, and a deadly gas called carbon monoxide is produced.
monomer A single molecule that can react with other molecules to form a large molecule
polymer A large molecule that is made out of many smaller molecules joined together by covalent bonds
4 main classes of biochemical compounds Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids
photosynthesis Biochemical reactions involved in making food
cellular respiration Biochemical reactions involved in releasing energy from food
enzymes A protein catalyst used by our bodies
vitamins Organic compounds that organisms need in small amounts, but that the organism cannot produce itself
centripetal force A center-seeking force
Bernoulli's Principle The pressure of a moving fluid decreases if the fluid moves faster

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
