| Bradypnea | slower breathing rate than normal |
| Tachypnoea | faster breathing rate than normal |
| Dyspnoea | painful breathing |
| Apnoea | a pause on cessation in breathing |
| Sputum (phlegm) | substance expelled from the tracheobronchial tree pharynx, mouth, sinuses and nose by coughing or clearing the throat |
| Haemoptysis | blood stained sputum |
| Ventilation | involves inspiration and expiration |
| Diffusion | oxygen and CO2 moving back and forth across the alveolar - capillary membrane |
| Compliance | measure of ease of expansion of the lung |
| Hypoxia | low level of oxygen delivery to tissue |
| Hypoxaemia | abnormally low levels of oxygen in the blood |
| Pulse Oximeter | measures the amount of oxygen being carried by haemoglobin |
| Cyanosis | blue tone to the skin and mucous membranes |
| Tachycardia | quicker than normal heart rate |
| Bradycardia | slower than normal heart rate |
| normal blood pressure | less than 120/80mmHg |
| normal heart rate | 60 to 100 beats per minute |
| normal oxygen saturation level | 95% or higher |
