Newtons Laws
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Inertia | an object's tendency to resist a change in motion |
Acceleration | the rate of change of velocity |
Force | Push or pull |
Mass | the amount of matter within an object |
Newtons 1st Law | An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. An object in motion will remain in motion with constant velocity unless acted upon by an unbalanced force |
Newtons 2nd Law | The force of an object is equal to its mass multiplied by its acceleration |
Newtons 3rd law | For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction |
Net Force | The sum of forces acting on an object |
Velocity | distance traveled per unit of time in one direction |
Momentum | the product of an object's mass and its velocity |
Equilibrium | the condition in which the net force of an object is zero |
Friction | the force that opposes motion between two objects |
Balanced Forces | separate forces that combine to cancel each other out or make a net force of zero |
Unbalanced Forces | a force that is not canceled out by another force and causes the motion of an object |
Speed | The distance an object travels per unit of time |
