Lesson 4: Earthquakes

QuestionAnswer
What is an Earthquake? weak or violent shaking of the Earth's surface caused by sudden movement of rocks beneath it
Where does an Earthquake commonly happen? faults
What is a Geological disaster agency in the Philippines? Philvocs
What does Philvocs mean? Philippine institute of volcanology and seismology
How many boundaries are there? 3
Name the types of boundaries. Convergent, Divergent, Transform
What does convergent boundary create? mountains, volcanoes, trenches
What does divergent boundaries create? rift valleys, seafloor spreading
What does transform boundaries create? fault lines
What is it called when two tectonic plates slide past each other? strike-slip fault
What is the place where energy is released in an earthquake? Focus
What is the epicenter? The point immediately above the focus
What is another name for focus? Hypocenter
What is the device that measures earthquake's? Seismograph
What does a seismograph measure? Magnitude and Intensity
What device measures the magnitude and intensity of an earthquake? seismograph
What is the measure of total energy released by an earthquake? (measured in a richter magnitude scale) Magnitude
What is Intensity? Perceived strength of an earthquake based on relative effect measured in mercalli scale
Name the Hazards of Earthquakes. Ground shaking, ground rupture, liquefaction, ground subsidence, tsunami
What is caused by the passage of seismic waves beneath structures? Ground Shaking
What causes ground rupture? Displacement of the ground due to the violent shaking of the surface (can be vertical or horizontal)
What is "takes place when there is high water pressure in saturated soils because of ground shaking"? liquefaction
What is ground subsidence? lowering of the land surface due to extraction of ground water and natural gas, mining and earthquakes
What is a tsunami? A series of large waves resulting from the disturbance of sea water
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "conduct and participate in regular earthquake drills." lie? Before
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "evaluate the structural soundness of buildings and houses, strengthen or retrofit if necessary." lie? Before
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "Stay calm." lie? During
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "Don't Panic" lie? After
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "If possible quickly open the door for exit" lie? During
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "when you are inside a structurally sound building or home, stay there" lie? during
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "Do Duck cover and hold" lie? during
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "Be prepared for aftershocks" lie? after
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "don't use telephones unless necessary" lie? after
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "Once the shaking stops, take the fastest and safest way out of the building" lie? after
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "don't enter damages buildings" lie? after
in disaster preparedness for an earthquake, where does "don't use elevators" lie? after
are breaks or cracks on the Earth's surface faults
The instrument used to measure the energy released during an Earthquake is called seismograph
happens when water pressure in saturated soils increases, which reduces ground capabilities to support structures liquefaction
refers to the total energy released by an Earthquake magnitude
The large waves that results from the disturbance of sea water due to earthquake is tsunami
