Nouns

TermDefinition
noun a word or word group that is used to name a person, place, thing, or idea
proper noun names a particular person, place, thing, or idea and is capitalized (Sandra, Houston)
common noun names any one group of persons, places, things, or ideas and is generally not capitalized (author, city, monument)
concrete noun names person, place, thing, or idea and can be perceived by one or more of the senses (violin, onions)
abstract noun names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic (peace, honor, self-control)
compound noun two or more words used together as a singular noun (together, hyphenated or separate) (baseball, guest of honor, self-confidence)
collective noun a word that names a group (band, jury, class)
