| Repression | The basic defense mechanism that banishes anxiety-arousing thoughts, feelings, and memories from consciousness. |
| Humanistic Theories | Theories emphasizing personal growth and fulfillment of individual potential. |
| Hierarchy of Needs | Maslow's pyramid of human needs, starting with basic physiological needs and rising to self-transcendence. |
| Self-Actualization | The process of realizing and fulfilling one's potential and capabilities. |
| Self-Transcendence | The striving for identity, meaning, and purpose beyond the self. |
| Unconditional Positive Regard | An attitude of total acceptance toward another person, promoting a person's feelings of self-worth. |
