Pumps & Filters

Pumps&Filters Vocab

TermDefinition
Centrifugal pump A mechanical device designed to move water with rotational force.
Impeller a rotating component of a centrifugal pump that pushes fluid outwards from the eye.
Volute The casing of a pump that receives the fluid being pumped and maintaining the velocity of a fluid.
Discharge The water/liquid coming out of a centrifugal pump that is being moved.
Inflow When the water is entering the recirculating system
Motor a device that exchanges power to run a machine
Shaft A part of the centrifugal pump that provides torque (a twisting force) to the impeller.
Media items used in filters. in mechanical filters, it would be sponges and foam pads whereas in biological filters uses the items to grow useful bacteria that filter ammonia and slow the ammonia cycle.
Water Return A step in a recirculating system where the purified water is saturated with oxygen before being returned to the fish tanks.
Tubing Any type of material (glass, plastic, metal, etc.) in a shape of a tube and can transport water and air.
Sponge Filter A piece of foam matrix that sits inside an aquarium and filtered the water through the ammonia cycle.
Ball Valve A device allowing the one way through of liquid, which is opened and close by a ball with cutouts in it.
Gate Valve a valve used to shoot off fluid flow or open it fully to provide full flow in a pipeline. It has a drop down gate to keep it flowing or closed.
Butterfly Valve a shut off valve that allows a quick opening and closing by turning in a rotational manner.
Check Valve A mechanism that closes to prevent backward flow of liquid.
Foot Valve A one way valve at the end of a suction line that prevents water from flowing backwards and has a filter on the end to prevent debris form getting it.
RBC (rotating biological contator) a type of fixed media filter which removes organic matter and ammonia from water.
Biofilter a technique in which waste is removed from water using bacteria to improve water quality
External Filter a filter designed to hold a variety of mechanical, biological, and chemical media and run water through it.
Backflush Reversing the waters flow to remove or flush out built up debris and particles in a filter.
Air Stone A device which sits inside a tank, typically made of limestone which diffuses air into the water through tiny bubbles.
Settleable Solid the matter in wasterwater which will not stay in suspension
Oxygenation The act of combining or supplying oxygen to a system.
Recirculating system An aquaculture system where the water is recycled; it is purified through mechanical and biological filtration and reused continuously.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
