Forces and Motions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Gravity | The natural force that attracts an object toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass |
| Mass | The measurement of the amount of matter something contains |
| Weight | The measurement of the pull of gravity on an object |
| Pull | A force to bring something toward someone or something |
| Push | A force to move something away from something or someone |
| Inertia | Matter's resistance to change in motion |
| Acceleration | The rate at which the speed of a moving object changes over time |
| Motion | Movement from one place to another in a certain amount of time |
| Friction | A force that slows down movement |
| Speed | The rate at which someone or something moves or travels |
| Distance | An amount of space between two things or people |
| Time | Continued progress in events from the past, present, and future |
| Force | Push or pull applied to an object |
| Position | The location of any object |
| Axis | The two perpendicular lines on a coordinate grid |
| Balanced Force | Forces that are equal causing an object to stop moving |
| Unbalanced Force | Forces that are not equal causing an object to move or change motion |
| Direction | a course along which someone or something moves |
| Velocity | the speed of something in a given direction |
| Air Resistance | the force acting on an object that is moving through air flowing in the opposite direction |
| Momentum | mass in motion |
| Resist | to fight or oppose |
| Declaration | Moves slower |
| Newton's First Law | an object in motion stays in motion unless a force acts upon it |
| Newton's Second Law | the rate of momentum is directly and proportional to the force applied to the object and takes place in the direction in which force is applied |
| Newton's Third Law | for every action (force) there is an equal and opposite reaction (force) |
