Term | Definition |
---|---|
Adaptation | A characteristic that improves an individual's ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment. |
Allele | Alternative versions of genes that account for trait variations in organisms. |
Ancestor | an organism from which other groups of organisms are descended. |
Chromosomes | Threadlike structures made of DNA molecules that contain the genes. |
Diversity | variety of life. |
Dominant Allele | A trait whose phenotypic effect is always observed if it is present in the gene. |
Embryo | Early stages of development in organisms. |
Extinction | A species that no longer has any known living individuals. |
Function | A description of how an organism, organ, or process normally works or what it can do. |
Gene | Sequence of DNA that codes for a protein and thus determines a trait. |
Genetic Engineering | The process of manipulating or altering the genetic material of a cell to produce a desirable trait in the organism. |
Genome | A complete set of chromosomes in an organism. |
Genotype | An organism's genetic makeup, or allele combinations. |
Heredity | The passing of genetic material from one generation to another, usually through sexual reproduction. |
Homologous | Structures in different species that are similar in arrangement because of common ancestry. |
Mutation | A change in the genetic code of an organism. |
Natural Selection | A process resulting in the survival and reproduction of organisms best adapted to the environment. |
Phenotype | An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits. |
Population | group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area. |
Structure | Internal and external bodily arrangement that allows for growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction. |
Trait | A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes. |
Artificial Selection | Selective breeding of plants and animals by humans to promote the occurrence of desirable traits in offspring. |
DNA | Deoxyribonucleic Acid - Genetic Information. |
Evolution | A process by which modern organisms have changed from ancient organisms over time. |
Recessive Allele | A trait whose phenotypic effect is not observed if the opposite trait is present. |
