Vocab Terms - Waves, Parts of Waves, Wave Speed, and Interaction of Waves
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Wave | is energy that moves through a medium (such as air, water, or solids) transferring energy from one place to another |
| Crest | is the highest point of a wave |
| Trough | is the lowest point of a wave |
| Amplitude | is the distance from the rest position (or midpoint) to the crest or trough of a wave |
| Wavelength | is the distance between two consecutive crests or troughs |
| Frequency | is the number of waves passing a point in a certain amount of time |
| Mechanical Waves | are waves that require a medium to travel through, like water waves or sound waves |
| Electromagnetic Waves | are waves that can travel through a vacuum (empty space), like light waves or radio waves |
| Transverse Waves | the particles of the medium move perpendicular to the direction of the wave |
| Longitudinal Waves | the particles of the medium move parallel to the direction of the wave |
| Sound Waves | How we hear music or speech |
| Light Waves | How we see colors and objects |
| Reflection | is when light bounces off materials |
| Absorption | is when light is taken up by materials |
| Transmission | is when light passes through materials |
| Wave Speed | = frequency x wave length |
