Mr.G's wave vocab
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Wave | a distubance that transfers energy to place to place |
| Medium | material throgh which a wave travels |
| Mechanical Wave | wave that requires a medium |
| Vibration | a repeted up or down, back or forth motion |
| Transverse Wave | wave that moves the medium in the direction perpindicular of the direction in which the wave travels |
| Crest | highest part of a transverse wave |
| Trough | lowest part of a transverse wave |
| Longitudinal Wave | wave that moves medium parallel to the direction in which the wave travels |
| Compression | part of a longitudinal wave where the particals of medium are squeezed together |
| Rarefaction | part of a longitudinal wave where the particals of the medium are spread apart |
| Surface Wave | wave that occurs at the surface between 2 mediums |
| Amplitude | the max. distance the particles of a medium move away from their rest poitions as a wave passes through a medium (wave height) |
| Wavelength | the distance between 2 crests |
| Frequency | # of complete waves that pass a given piont in a certain amt. of time |
| Hertz | unit of measure fo frequency |
| Reflection | bouncing back of a wave when it hits a surface through which it cannot pass |
| Angle of Incidence | angle between anincoming wave & an imaginary line drawn perpindicular to the surface |
| Angle of Reflection | angle between a reflcted wave & an imaginary line perpindicular to the surface |
| Refraction | the bending of waves as they enter a different medium |
| Diffraction | bending of waves around the edge of a barrier |
| Interference | the interaction between waves that meet |
| Constructive Interference | interference when 2 waves combine to make a larger amplitude |
| Destructive Interference | interference when 2 waves combine to make a wave with less amplitude |
| Standing Wave | wave that apppears to be standing still though it's really 2 waves interfering as they pass eachother |
| Node | a point of zero amplitude on a standing wave |
| Antinode | point of max. amplitudeon a standing wave |
| Resonance | the increase in amplitudeof vibrations that occurs when external vibrations match the objects natural frequency |
| Seismic Wave | wave produced by an earthquake |
| Primary Wave | a longitudinal Seismic wave |
| Secondary Wave | a transverse Seismic wave |
| Tsunami | surface wave caused by an under water earthquake |
| Seismograph | instrument used to detect & measure earthquakes |
