Infection control wellness and disease

QuestionAnswer
Attenuated: The alteration of a virus or infectious agent which makes it weakened or harmless, used for live viruses.
Bloodborne pathogens: Pathogen founds in human blood or other body fluids that can cause a disease in people.
Debridement: Removal of damaged tissue from a wound.
Direct transmission: Direct contact with a pathogen, which includes touch contact or physical contact with droplets in the air.
Exudate: Mass of fluid or cells that has seeped out of a blood vessel or wound.
Immunizations: Process through which a person becomes immune or resistant to an infectious disease. immunization is often an injection.
Inactivated vaccines: Vaccines that consist of an inactivated virus or pathogen.
indirect transmission: Occurs when an infectious agent is airborne, on a surface, transmitted via blood, food, or water, or when an infectious agent is transmitted via a vector (mosquito, tick, flea).
Infectious agent: Harmful pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa) that can cause disease.
Live vaccines: Vaccines in which a live virus is used for immunization, but the virus is an attenuated or weakened strain.
Medical screening: Preventive measure used to identify potential disease at an early stage in people at risk of a specific disorder or disease.
Monitoring: Used for patients who have been diagnosed with a disease.
Pathogens: Micro-organisms capable of causing disease or infection.
Point-of-care testing: Diagnostic testing that is done at or near the place of patient care.
Safety data sheets: A document that includes info such as the properties of each chemical; the physical, health, and environmental health hazards; protective measures; and safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the chemical.
Standard precautions: Infection control practices used to prevent disease transmission through blood, other body fluids, and non-intact skin.
Wellness: The state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.
