mechanical waves
Term | Definition |
---|---|
wave | A regular pattern of motion created by a vibratory disturbance. |
oscillation | A repeating and regular motion, like back and forth. |
longitudinal wave | The particles in the wave move in a parallel direction to the wave. Slinkys are great examples of this type of wave. |
transverse wave | The particles move at right angles to the direction of the wave. |
parallel lines | Lines that never intersect. |
perpendicular lines | Lines that intersect and form 90 degree angles. |
amplitude | The height of a wave at the maximum displacement from its resting position/equilibrium. |
frequency | The number of times a waves cycles in any given time. |
crest | Top of a wave |
trough | Bottom of a wave. |
