Moral Development

QuestionAnswer
Young children make decisions about right and wrong based on... the consequences of the behavior.
If it has a good consequence, it is the right thing to do
If it has a bad consequence, it is the wrong thing to do
Those who focus on consequences: moral realists
Those who set consequences aside and consider intent: moral relativists
When one can't look beyond consequences this is an inability to: decenter
The moral realist accepts: a higher authority
The moral realist tends to be: very rigid about rules
The moral relativist accepts the need for rules, but... recognizes that sometimes the rules don’t apply. They complicate situations with the “Yes, but . . .” arguments.
