Cerebral Cortex controls very high level thoughts, processing.
Right Hemisphere controls gross motor movements + sensations of left side of body. Function: art, music, mathematical reasoning
Left Hemisphere controls gross movements + sensations of right side of body. Function; Verbal, Speech, Language, Reading, & Writing
Fissure Line of separation between the left and right hemispheres
Corpus Callosum Bundle of nerve fibers that transfer information from one half of the cerebral cortex to the other.
The Frontal Lobe contains the motor strip. Every part of the body capable of moving is in this strip.
Occipital Lobe interprets visual information
Parietal Lobe Contains the sensory strip, which recognizes when a particular part of the body is being touched or in pain
Temporal Lobe responsible for hearing and some speech
Thalamus acts as relay station to send incoming and outgoing messages to an from various parts of the brain "post office of the brain"
Hypothalamus controls rage, fear, hunger, thirst, and sexual desire. Four F's - Feeding, Fleeing, Fighting, & Fornicating
Amygdala responsible for basic emotional responses and fear responses. Damage leads to no or exaggerated fear responses.
Hippocampus responsible for consolidation of memories. Consolidation means turning information into a memory code to store.
Cerebellum maintains balance, coordination, and movement.
Reticular Formation catches nerve signals going to and from the brain, then signals you to be more awake/alert if there are many or become sleepy if there are very few signals
Pons controls facial expressions (I.e. smiling, frowning, furrowing your brow)
Medulla Oblongata controls unconscious functions such as breathing, blinking, heart rate, etc. so we can do them without having to think about it.
