Discrimination selectively unjustified negative behavior toward others that involves denying equality of treatment
Prejudice a preconceived negative judgement or opinion, usually based on limited info toward a social group
Stereotype generalization of unjustified beliefs about a group (b/c theyre overgeneralizations)
Racism a system of advantages based on race + prejudice w/ power
Culture the practices & experiences that meld us together
Diversity a representation of many different types of people based on race, opinion, background, beliefs, sexual orientation, heritage, & life experience
Inclusion bringing together & harnessing diversity in a beneficial way (the cake)
Equality sameness, promoting fairness and justice by giving everyone the same thing
Equity fairness, making sure everyone gets access to the same opportunities
Politeness Protocol avoiding controversial topics like race, religion, sex b/c its uncomfortable
Academic Protocol favoring objective discussion over personal experiences & emotions
Color-blind Protocol ignoring/being blind to race b/c it doesn't matter
Culturally Competent the ability of an individual to understand and respect values, attitudes, beliefs, and mores that differ across cultures

Social Capital relationships & affiliations that can be translated into social class benefits (who we know)
Human Capital perceived value derived from education, occupations, interpersonal skills, or innate physical attributes
Cultural Capital the tastes & aesthetics that people develop & maintain through socialization
Upward Mobility everyone strives for social class mobility and wants to move upward
Protestant Work Ethic (an extension of upward mobility) the ladder of success is due to individualism, hard work, and materialism
What are some strengths that African American people face? - flexibility in family roles (work roles, family responsibilities, chores) - strong kinship bonds - work & achievement ethic - strong religious orientation (low rates of substance abuse?) - racial socialization
What are some challenges that African American people face? - RACISM - police brutality / violence - wealth/pay gap, higher poverty & unemployment rates - structural racism (health gaps) - higher rates of incarceration
Intersectional Invisibility only looking at one part of a person's experience instead of the whole person's experience and how the parts interact (only looking at the queer and not the queer woman)
Judgmental Heuristics quick-decisions or mental shortcuts used to make judgments or reach decisions
Diagnostic Overshadowing focusing on a more prominent characteristic when identifying a client's problem, causing you to overlook other factors (or provide effective care)
Implicit Bias negative stereotypes that arise unknowingly and that are formed subconsciously
Postmigration adjustments/challenges for refugees & immigrants coming to America? - racism, xenophobia, & intolerance - systematic profiling of POC (by police) - health, housing, employment, education discrimination - language barrier - family dynamics, acculturation, culture & community loss
Sexual Orientation who a person is emotionally, romantically, and/or sexually attracted to + a person's sense of identity based on those attractions, behaviors, and community
Three misconceptions of aging 1. Aging isn't all loss & decline 2. You have more control over aging than you believe (plasticity & life style) 3. Age-related losses may be reversible
Gender Identity inward - how someone views themselves and their gender (cis, trans, enby, etc.)
Gender Expression outward - how someone presents their gender (a ftm man dressing masculine or a cis man dressing feminine)
Religious perspectives of African American people - churches = support & gives therapeutic responses - spirituality = collective identity, all things are interconnected, spirituality is in all
Religious perspectives of Indigenous people - connection & harmony with life - healing is necessary for the "circle" - community & connectedness - all life is sacred, responsible to care for Earth - relationship w/ creator, conscience, intuition, spiritual beliefs, rituals, social support
Religious perspectives of Asian American people - wide variety of religions (Hinduism, Taoism, etc.) - family honor, duty & obligation, hierarchy & status, indirect communication, self-control - family & ancestor worship
Religious perspectives of Latino people - Catholicism, Evangelical religious groups - spiritual beliefs -> physical symptoms, psychological problems, healing - psychic abilities = mediums, illness = supernatural causes - spiritual possession, guides, & healing rituals
