Discrimination | selectively unjustified negative behavior toward others that involves denying equality of treatment |
Prejudice | a preconceived negative judgement or opinion, usually based on limited info toward a social group |
Stereotype | generalization of unjustified beliefs about a group (b/c theyre overgeneralizations) |
Racism | a system of advantages based on race + prejudice w/ power |
Culture | the practices & experiences that meld us together |
Diversity | a representation of many different types of people based on race, opinion, background, beliefs, sexual orientation, heritage, & life experience |
Inclusion | bringing together & harnessing diversity in a beneficial way (the cake) |
Equality | sameness, promoting fairness and justice by giving everyone the same thing |
Equity | fairness, making sure everyone gets access to the same opportunities |
Politeness Protocol | avoiding controversial topics like race, religion, sex b/c its uncomfortable |
Academic Protocol | favoring objective discussion over personal experiences & emotions |
Color-blind Protocol | ignoring/being blind to race b/c it doesn't matter |
Culturally Competent | the ability of an individual to understand and respect values, attitudes, beliefs, and mores that differ across cultures |

Social Capital | relationships & affiliations that can be translated into social class benefits (who we know) |

Upward Mobility | everyone strives for social class mobility and wants to move upward |
Protestant Work Ethic | (an extension of upward mobility) the ladder of success is due to individualism, hard work, and materialism |
What are some strengths that African American people face? | - flexibility in family roles (work roles, family responsibilities, chores) - strong kinship bonds - work & achievement ethic - strong religious orientation (low rates of substance abuse?) - racial socialization |
What are some challenges that African American people face? | - RACISM - police brutality / violence - wealth/pay gap, higher poverty & unemployment rates - structural racism (health gaps) - higher rates of incarceration |
Intersectional Invisibility | only looking at one part of a person's experience instead of the whole person's experience and how the parts interact (only looking at the queer and not the queer woman) |
Judgmental Heuristics | quick-decisions or mental shortcuts used to make judgments or reach decisions |
Diagnostic Overshadowing | focusing on a more prominent characteristic when identifying a client's problem, causing you to overlook other factors (or provide effective care) |
Implicit Bias | negative stereotypes that arise unknowingly and that are formed subconsciously |
Postmigration adjustments/challenges for refugees & immigrants coming to America? | - racism, xenophobia, & intolerance - systematic profiling of POC (by police) - health, housing, employment, education discrimination - language barrier - family dynamics, acculturation, culture & community loss |
