Weather

Factors that effect our weather

TermDefinition
convection current a current caused by the rising of warm, less dense air and sinking of cooled, more dense air
evaporation Liquid warms to a gas (water vapor)
condensation gas (water vapor) cools to a liquid (how clouds are formed).
maritime polar airmass air mass that carries cold, moist air; is formed over the ocean in polar areas.
warm front a front formed when a warm air mass pushes above cold air; causes light and steady precipitation with warmer temperatures
temperature a measure of the speed of the molecules: a measure of how hot or cold something is.
wind the horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure
high pressure pressure formed when cool, more dense air sinks and dries out moisture; weather will be clear and dry.
low pressure pressure formed when warm, less dense air lifts and condenses into clouds; weather will be cloudy with precipitation.
stationary front a front formed when cold air mass meets a warm air mass and stops. Causes slow and steady precipitation
maritime tropical air mass air mass that carries warm and moist air; forms over warm seas.
continental polar air mass air mass that carries cold and dry air; forms over dry, cold land (like Canada).
continental tropical air mass air mass that carries warm and dry air; forms over dry, hot deserts.
front the boundary where two air masses meet
cold front a front formed when a cold air mass pushes warm air up; causes quick, intense storms with cooler temperatures
anemometer instrument for measuring wind speed
barometer instrument used for measuring air pressure
thermometer instrument used to measure temperature

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
