Thyroid Drugs

QuestionAnswer
What is the most common drug prescribed for hypothyroidism? Levothyroxine (Synthroid & Levoxyl)
How long does it take for symptoms of hypothyroidism to improve after synthroid is started? Why? 28-35 days, because synthroid is composed of T4 which has a long half-life (7 days)
What will levothyroxine do to thyroid hormones in the body? T3 & T4 will be increased and TSH will be decreased
What drug is used to treat the most severe form of hypothyroidism, myxedema coma? Liothyronine (Cytomel)
Side Effects with thyroid drugs are rare, but when they occur what are they? increased cardiac output, CNS excitation, and thyrotoxicosis (increased temp, severe tachycardia, dysrhythmias, muscle weakness, coma, and death)
If Liothyronine therapy is effective what will happen to thyroid hormone levels? T4 will not increase, but TSH will decrease
Antithyroid Drugs treat what condition? Hyperthyroidism
List symptoms of Grave's Disease. fast metabolic rate, weight loss, increased heart rate, dysrhythmias, restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, increased temp, flushed hot sin, increased levels of T3 & T4
List Antithyroid Drugs. Tapazole (methimazole), PTU (propothiouracil)
What is a side effect associated with Tapazole? agranulocytosis
What is a side effect associated with PTU? rash
List two Iodides. SSKI (saturated solution of potassium iodide), Lugol's solution
What do Iodides do? suppress T3 & T4 synthesis
When are Iodides used? Prior to thyroid gland removal
How often are iodides taken before sugery? Tid for 10 days before surgery
What are side effects of Iodides? Iodism: metallic taste, excess salivation, swelling of salivary glands, nausea, skin changes
