Term | Definition |
---|---|
Thermal Energy | sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the particles that make up the material. |
Temperature | represents the average kinetic energy of the particles that make up a material |
Conduction | transfer of thermal energy between materials by direct contact |
Convection | when moving fluids (liquid or gas) rise and fall due to differences in density caused by differences in thermal energy. |
Radiation | transfer of thermal energy from one material to another by electromagnetic waves |
Insulator | material through which thermal energy does not flow easily |
Conductor | material through which thermal energy flows easily |
Kinetic Energy | energy of motion |
Heat | movement of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object |
Molecule | a group of atoms put together |
Celsius | When water freezes at zero degrees (metric) |
Farenheit | when water freezes at 32 degrees (American) |
Density | a measure of the amount of mass in a certain space. |
Volume | the amount of space that a substance or object occupies |
Mass | amount of matter in an object |
