| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Conduction | thermal energy (heat) transferred when two objects touch (works best in solids) |
| Convection | thermal energy (heat) transferred by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas (works best in fluids) |
| Fluid | a liquid or gas that has the ability to flow |
| Radiation | thermal energy (heat) transferred through matter or empty space by electromagnetic waves (no direct contact needed) |
| Conductor | a material that transfers thermal or electrical energy VERY WELL |
| Insulator | a material that does not transfer thermal or electrical energy very well |
| Thermal Expansion | the point at which two objects that are touching reach the same temperature |
| Thermal Energy | energy an object has depending on the motion of its atoms (total kinetic energy) |
| Thermal Contraction | a decrease in the size of a substance in response to a decrease in the temperature of the substance |
