Vocab on Waves
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Absorption | the transfer of energy from a wave to a medium |
| Amplitude | the distance between the resting point and highest crest |
| Barrier | something that blocks the way; obstacle |
| Bend | to turn or force something to become curved or angular (close to some sort of angle) from a straight position |
| Color | what you see when light shines off an object |
| Color Filter | a transparent material that blocks some colors and lets others through; used for color manipulation |
| Echo | a repeated sound caused by reflection of audio on a surface |
| Electromagnetic Wave | a form of energy that can travel through empty space |
| Frequency | the number of times a wave repeats in an amount of time; measured in HERTZ |
| Lens | a curved piece of glass/plastic designed to refract light in certain ways |
| Light Wave | waves that come from a light source (e.g: visible light - ROYGBIV) |
| Matter | anything that has mass or takes up space |
| Mechanical Wave | waves that require a medium |
| Medium/Media | material through which a wave travels (e.g: glass, water) |
| Mirror | a reflecting surface |
| Path | also known as trajectory; the path an object follows in space |
| Prism | a piece of glass/transparent material that bends light, usually in a pyramid form |
| Propagate | the way waves travel |
| Proportion | changes in regard to other things |
| Ray | the movement of light from its source to a surface/object |
| Ray Diagram | a way to show how light travels, including when it reaches a surface |
| Reflection | waves bouncing off of a medium |
| Refraction/Refracted | the bending of waves due to speed change |
| Sound Wave | a vibration/wave that travels through all matter and can be heard |
| Transmit | to cause light, heat, sound, etc. to pass through a medium |
| Transparent | allows light to pass through (can be restricted for filters) |
| Visible Light Spectrum | the portion of colors in the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see |
| Wave | any disturbance that transfers energy from point A to point B |
| Wavelength | the distance a wave travels before it repeats again |
| Brightness | the amount of light or dark in reflected light; intensity or light |
