6.P.3.1 Energy Conservation and Transfer

| Kinetic Energy | the energy of motion |
| Thermal Energy | the average kinetic energy due to the motion of the atoms in a substance |
| Temperature | the measure of how hot or cold something is; a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of an object |
| Thermal Expansion | an increase in the size of a substance in response to an increase in the temperature of the substance |
| Electrical Energy Transfer | when an electrical source is connected in a a complete circuit to an electrical device |
| Electromagnetic Waves | light waves that transmit energy through matter or empty space (sunlight) |
| Mechanical Energy | when objects push or pull on each other |
| Thermal Energy Transfer | when a warm object is in contact with a cooler one |
| Heat | the transfer of thermal energy between objects that are different temperatures |
| Thermal Equilibrium | the point at which two objects that are touching reach the same temperature |
