Vocabulary Associated with Informational Texts

| informational text | non-fiction passages that explain or inform on a certain topic |
| inference | a conclusion based on evidence found in the text |
| central idea | a brief summary of the author's most important point, also called the main idea. |
| fact | a statement that can be proved |
| opinion | a belief or view about something |
| cause and effect | a text that explains the reason something happens and the result of it happening. |
| compare and contrast | a text that finds similarities and differences between two things. |
| problem and solution | a text that presents a problem and offers solutions to solve the problem |
| author's purpose | The reason the author has for writing the text. (inform, persuade, or entertain) |
| point of view | the opinion of the author |
| claim | the main argument of an informative text. (what is the author trying to prove?) |
| evidence | facts that prove the truth of a statement or claim |
| topic | what a piece of writing is about |
| audience | the people who watch, read, or listen to something |
| source | a book, article, website, person, or piece of media that contains information |
| paraphrase | to express someone else's ideas in your own words |
| plagiarism | presenting someone else's ideas or words as your own |
| cite | to quote a source as evidence or to justify an argument |
