| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) |
| Solid | has a definite shape and volume. Molecules are tightly packed and vibrate in place. |
| Liquid | has no definite shape but has a definite volume. Molecules are loosely packed and slide past each other. |
| Gas | No definite shape and no definite volume. Molecules are very far apart and move freely. |
| Melting | Solid to a liquid |
| Freezing | liquid to a solid |
| Condensation | gas to a liquid |
| Evaporation | liquid to a gas on the top of the surface only (drying hair, towel at the pool, etc.) |
| Boiling | liquid to a gas throughout the substance |
| Sublimation | going directly from a solid to a gas |
| Deposition | going directly from a gas to a solid |
| Melting Point of Water | 32oF or 0oC |
| Boiling Point of Water | 212oF or 100oC |
